G96 may be the Best Gun Oil Products we’ve never heard of…
I’ve personally bought at least a dozen different gun oils trying to find that perfect one that does it all CLP (Cleans, Lubes, and Protects). Also, I’ve heard countless stories about everything from 3-in-1, Mobile 5w-40, WD40, and even cooking oils that people swear are the very best.
First, let me say this is a controversial subject we will tackle at a later time, but suffice it to say there’s a lot to this subject, and it’s always best to follow the manufacturer’s website or documentation.
My first general rule is “if it ain’t made specifically for guns it’s probably best to leave it alone”. So 3-in-1, cooking oils, etc should not be used (IMHO).
I prefer products that have been around long enough to have a track record of success. Nowadays, toxic chemicals are not a good thing if you have children or work with guns in enclosed spaces. So forget about “Brake Cleaner” or car oils for an average gun cleaner.
There are many good products out there, but one product you may not have heard of is G96. They make a family of good products that may be just the one you’re looking for..
G96 has been around for at least 20 years and is highly regarded by the Military.
The U.S. Military/ARDEC findings included:
“Your candidate CLP, G96, not only recorded excellent performance in both the cold temperature test and the salt-spray test with no Class I stoppages in either, but your best two weapons averaged only 4 stoppages in the dust test against the criteria of no more than 5, so we are pleased to qualify your current formulation.”
They can’t say which popular gun products did not qualify through the above evaluation, and my lips are sealed.
